Half of UK small businesses are invisible in AI search

We ran AiBoost’s free GEO Audit on more than 160 UK businesses. Most do not appear when a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI to recommend a business like theirs.

AI has quietly become a discovery channel, and most small businesses are not in it

When a customer wants a plumber, an accountant, a photographer or a supplier, a growing share of them no longer scroll a list of links. They ask an AI assistant and act on the handful of names it returns. If a business is not among those names, it is not in the running, and it never learns it was left out.

To measure how ready UK small businesses are for this shift, AiBoost ran its GEO Audit on more than 160 of them, scoring how often and how well each is surfaced across AI assistants for the real questions its customers ask. The picture is stark: for most, the answer is barely at all.

Being absent is worse than ranking low

The visibility scores cluster at the bottom. Half of the businesses we audited scored under 20 out of 100, and three quarters scored under 30. For the typical business, the AI assistant returns competitors and leaves them out of the conversation entirely across most of the questions that matter.

On average, a business was absent from 24 of the 34 core customer questions we tested. A prospective customer could ask an AI assistant seven reasonable questions about that market and never once be pointed to the business.

AI does not leave a blank. It recommends someone else.

Being absent is not neutral. When a business does not appear, the AI recommends other businesses instead. In the same 24 of 34 searches where the average business was missing, AI put competitors in front of the customer. The customer never learns the business existed. They are simply handed a rival.

And the rivals it reaches for tend to be the biggest, most established names. An independent artificial-flowers shop was passed over for Amazon, Etsy and national specialists. A local pearl-jewellery brand lost out to international chains. A boutique whisky-tour operator was edged out by the largest regional tour companies. When AI recommends anyone, it rarely recommends the small business.

A small group is already winning the answer

The best-scoring businesses reached the 60s and 70s out of 100, appearing consistently and being actively recommended. As customers lean harder on AI to shortlist, that visibility compounds into enquiries their competitors never see. The gap between the invisible majority and this visible minority is the opportunity, and today very few businesses are competing for it.

What this means for a small business

The businesses in this study are not doing anything wrong. Most have a working website and rank respectably in traditional search. AI assistants simply read and recommend the web differently, and being findable there takes deliberate work that almost no small business has done yet. That is precisely why the field is so open: the businesses that act now can own their category in AI answers before it gets crowded.

Methodology

AiBoost ran its free GEO Audit on more than 160 UK businesses between April and July 2026, of which 151 completed with a full visibility score, which the figures here are based on. For each business, the tool generated 34 questions a real customer would ask across the awareness, consideration and decision stages, then put those questions to leading AI assistants including ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, with live web search enabled, recording whether the business appeared, how prominently, and whether it was recommended, combined into a single 0 to 100 visibility score.

These are businesses that chose to test their AI visibility, so the sample is self-selected and not a random national sample. The findings describe UK small businesses that tested their AI visibility in 2026.

“Search is moving from a page of links to a single AI answer, and that answer only has room for a few names. Our data shows most UK small businesses are not among them yet. The good news is that this is winnable right now, while the field is still wide open.”
