TL;DR
- ChatGPT ads are paid ad cards that appear inside ChatGPT conversations, bought through OpenAI’s Ads Manager or its Ads API.
- You can pay per impression or per click. Campaigns that optimise for conversions still bill per click.
- Targeting is by country, region, platform (iOS, Android, web) and custom audiences. “Context hints” describe your ad, but OpenAI says they are not exact-match keywords.
- Our own five-day UK test in August 2026 cost £87.40 for 4,308 impressions and 42 clicks: a 0.97% click-through rate and an average cost per click of £2.08.
- OpenAI reported 3 conversions from that test, about £29 each. Measurement needs care: a clicks campaign does not optimise towards conversions at all.
Key facts
- OpenAI’s Ads documentation lists three campaign objectives: impressions, clicks and conversions (OpenAI Developers, Bidding and Budgets, 2026).
- Conversion campaigns “optimize for the selected action and bill for valid clicks” (OpenAI Developers, 2026).
- Bid strategies are fixed bid, Maximize clicks and Maximize conversions, grouped by OpenAI as “Maximize Results”.
- Context hints “are not exact-match keywords”, and they do not replace geographic, platform or audience targeting (OpenAI Developers, Targeting, 2026).
- Custom audiences used for inclusion need at least 25,000 matched users (OpenAI Developers, Targeting, 2026).
- “chatgpt ads” has around 3,600 UK searches a month, with one of the higher cost-per-click estimates among AI search phrases in Google Ads data (keyword.com, October 2026).
- AiBoost’s UK test, 7 to 11 August 2026: 4,308 impressions, 42 clicks, £87.40 spend, 3 OpenAI-reported conversions (OpenAI Ads API).
ChatGPT ads can now be bought through OpenAI’s Ads Manager, and UK businesses are searching for them in volume. Most of what is written about them is either OpenAI’s own documentation or speculation. This guide puts the two together with something rarer: the real numbers from a live UK campaign we ran for our own free audit, including what the platform reported, what our analytics saw, and where the two disagreed.
How ChatGPT ads work
Short answer (October 2026): you build a campaign, an ad group and an ad in OpenAI’s Ads Manager. The ad is a card with a title, optional body text, an image and a link. ChatGPT shows it to users in your target locations when their conversation is relevant to what you describe.
The structure will be familiar to anyone who has run Google or Meta ads:
- Campaign: objective, budget and targeting (locations, platforms, audiences).
- Ad group: how you bid and what you pay for, plus “context hints” describing the product or need.
- Ad: the creative and the landing page. Our ad used OpenAI’s chat card format with the title “Free AI Visibility Audit”, an image, and a link to our audit page.
Context hints are not keywords
This is the biggest difference from search advertising. OpenAI describes context hints as “additional information about the ads in an ad group”, used to “describe relevant products, use cases, or needs that the creative and landing page may not fully cover.” It is explicit that “hints are not exact-match keywords.” You are describing your offer to a system that decides relevance itself, rather than bidding on the words people type.
Our hints, for reference, were four short phrases: “AI visibility tool”, “how the AI mentions your business”, “how to find out if my business is visible to the AI” and “AI replacing traditional search”.
Targeting options
- Location: country, region or market, with exclusions.
- Platform: the ChatGPT iOS app, the Android app and the web. Leaving platform targeting out at creation defaults to all three.
- Custom audiences: uploaded customer lists can include or exclude people, or adjust bids. Inclusion and bid multipliers need at least 25,000 matched users, so this is out of reach for most small businesses’ customer lists.
ChatGPT ads cost: bidding and billing explained
Short answer: you choose what to optimise for (impressions, clicks or conversions) and what you are billed for (impressions or clicks). Conversion campaigns are billed per click.
| Objective | You pay per | Bid strategies | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Impression | Fixed bid | Awareness, testing creative reach |
| Clicks | Click | Fixed bid or Maximize clicks | Traffic to a page, early testing |
| Conversions | Click | Fixed bid or Maximize conversions | Sign-ups, leads, purchases, once tracking works |
Two practical points from the documentation. First, new campaigns, ad groups and ads are created paused, so nothing spends until you switch it on. Second, a conversion campaign needs one active standard conversion event from OpenAI’s pixel or Conversions API. Without working tracking, you cannot choose the conversions objective at all.
OpenAI does not publish a rate card. What a click costs depends on your bid, budget, targeting and competition, which is why first-hand numbers are useful.
What our UK ChatGPT ads test cost
Short answer: £87.40 bought 4,308 impressions and 42 clicks over five days, an average cost per click of £2.08 and a click-through rate of 0.97%.
We ran a clicks campaign for our free AI visibility audit from 7 to 11 August 2026, UK only, with a £15 daily budget and a fixed maximum bid of £2.25 per click. These are the daily figures from OpenAI’s Ads API.

| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Impressions | 4,308 |
| Clicks | 42 |
| Click-through rate | 0.97% |
| Spend | £87.40 |
| Average cost per click | £2.08 (maximum bid £2.25) |
| Cost per 1,000 impressions | £20.29 |
| Conversions reported by OpenAI | 3 |
| Cost per reported conversion | £29.13 |
For context, our own guide to Google Ads costs in the UK shows how widely search click prices vary by sector. A £2.08 average click for a B2B marketing offer is modest, but a single small test proves little about what your category will cost.
From impression to lead

Google Analytics recorded 38 sessions carrying OpenAI’s click identifier, about 90% of the 42 paid clicks. The gap is normal for any paid channel: some visitors leave before the analytics script loads, and some block it.
If you are weighing ChatGPT ads against channels you already run, our paid ads audit compares your current Google and Meta costs with what the new placements would need to beat.
Tracking ChatGPT ads conversions: what we learned
Short answer: install OpenAI’s measurement pixel before you spend, define one clear conversion event, and do not expect a clicks campaign to find you leads. It is optimising for clicks.
Three lessons from our test, each of which cost us reporting accuracy:
- Install the pixel first. Our pixel went live on day two of the campaign, so day one’s clicks have no conversion data. OpenAI offers a JavaScript measurement pixel, an image tag for pages without JavaScript, and a server-to-server Conversions API.
- Fire the event at the real conversion. Our sign-up event first fired when the audit form was submitted, which is earlier than a completed audit. Reported conversions therefore overstate finished leads unless the event sits on the true finish line.
- A clicks campaign does not optimise to conversions. Conversion events on a clicks campaign improve reporting only. To have OpenAI chase sign-ups, you need a conversions campaign, which bills per click but optimises for the event. It has to be created as a separate, new campaign.
Label your traffic too. OpenAI appends its own click identifier to landing page URLs, and campaigns accept landing page query parameters, so you can add standard UTM tags and see the channel by name in Google Analytics and your CRM.
ChatGPT ads versus appearing in ChatGPT’s answers
Short answer: ads buy a paid placement while you pay. Being named in ChatGPT’s own answers is earned, and it keeps working when the budget stops.
| ChatGPT ads | Organic mentions in answers | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get there | Budget, bid and targeting | Content, reputation and structured information that AI systems trust |
| Speed | Same day, once approved | Weeks to months |
| Stops when | The budget stops | Competitors or sources change |
| Measured by | Ads Manager and your pixel | Repeated testing of real questions |
The two work best together. Ads test which messages make ChatGPT users click while the slower work of generative engine optimisation builds the organic presence. Our practical guide to appearing in AI search results covers the organic side, and ChatGPT ranking factors explains what influences citations. Ecommerce brands should also read our piece on ChatGPT shopping recommendations, since product feeds are a separate route into ChatGPT.
Should your business try ChatGPT ads?
Short answer: test them if your buyers research in ChatGPT and you can measure a conversion. Wait if you cannot yet track leads, or if your Google and Meta campaigns are not profitable.
- Good fit: B2B services, software, professional services and considered purchases, where buyers ask ChatGPT to compare options before contacting anyone.
- Good fit: businesses with a low-friction first step, such as a free tool, a quote form or a booking page, so a click can turn into a measurable action.
- Wait: if conversion tracking is not working on your site yet. You would be paying for clicks you cannot judge.
- Wait: if your existing Google Ads or Meta ads are losing money. Fix the proven channels first.
Start small: one campaign, one ad group, a daily budget you are comfortable losing, and a two-week window. Decide in advance which number would make you continue.
Methodology
The campaign ran in AiBoost’s own OpenAI Ads Manager account, objective clicks, billed per click, fixed maximum bid £2.25, daily budget £15, targeting the United Kingdom on all platforms. One ad group and one chat card ad pointed to the AiBoost free GEO audit page. Delivery figures (impressions, clicks, spend, cost per click, conversions) were pulled from the OpenAI Ads API Insights endpoint at campaign level, by day. Session counts come from Google Analytics 4, counting sessions whose landing URL carried OpenAI’s click identifier. Search demand figures come from keyword.com, which uses Google Ads data.
Limitations
This is one advertiser, one offer and five serving days, so treat the numbers as a single data point, not a benchmark. Costs will differ by sector, bid, creative and competition, and the platform is changing quickly. The measurement pixel went live after the campaign started, and the conversion event fired on form submission rather than on a completed audit, so reported conversions are approximate. OpenAI’s interface and documentation may change after October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Are ChatGPT ads available in the UK?
Yes. AiBoost ran a UK-targeted campaign through OpenAI’s Ads Manager in August 2026, billed in pounds. OpenAI’s documentation notes that a valid country code does not guarantee the country is available to every account, so check the supported locations in your own account.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
OpenAI does not publish fixed prices. You set a budget and bid, and pay per impression or per click. In AiBoost’s UK test, the average cost per click was £2.08 and the cost per 1,000 impressions was £20.29.
How do I advertise on ChatGPT?
Open an account in OpenAI’s Ads Manager, add your business details, create a campaign with a budget and targeting, an ad group with your bid and context hints, and an ad with an image, title and link. New items start paused, so switch them on once the setup is complete.
Can I target keywords with ChatGPT ads?
No. You add context hints that describe your product, use cases or the needs it meets, but OpenAI states they are not exact-match keywords. Relevance is decided by the platform.
Do ChatGPT ads affect whether ChatGPT recommends my business organically?
They are separate. Ads buy eligibility to show your card when a conversation is relevant. Organic mentions depend on the content and sources ChatGPT trusts, which is the work of generative engine optimisation. Test where you stand today with our free AI visibility audit.
What conversion tracking do ChatGPT ads use?
OpenAI offers a JavaScript measurement pixel, an image tag for pages without JavaScript, and a server-to-server Conversions API. To optimise for conversions, you need one active standard conversion event attached to a conversions campaign.
